WTC New York site milestones report released

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PA) recently released a report detailing the progress it has made to achieve major rebuilding milestones at the World Trade Center site.

Eight of the nine major milestones have been completed, and work on the ninth – completion of excavation work in the Tower 2 and Tower 4 areas – is continuing. The PA also announced it has achieved the first quarterly milestone for 2009 – the removal of the signature ramp that provided access from street level to bedrock in the Memorial area, allowing steel installation to continue.

Chairman Anthony R. Coscia said, “Today’s progress report is one measure among many that delivers on our commitment to rebuild the WTC site with transparency and accountability. Looking ahead, we resolve to keep the public aware of what’s happening– progress we’ve made as well as challenges we face – at the site.”

The eight major milestones achieved are completion of the South Core shear walls and foundation work of One WTC, the Freedom Tower; turnover of final construction documents to Phoenix Constructors, the start of procurement of 22,000 tons of structural steel, and the start of South Mezzanine steel installation at the Transportation Hub; completion of steel installation in the northern part of the West Bathtub, and of the structural design of the pavilion of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum; and contractor mobilization for construction of the Vehicle Security Center’s foundation Walls.

The major milestones were established as part of the WTC Assessment, released in October 2008, a comprehensive review of all of the major projects at the site. The full progress report is available at wtcprogress.com
